The infected are not one flat mob family. Region, terrain, and variant type all change how dangerous they are and what weapons handle them well.
Infected Bands
| Type | Commonly found in | Main threat |
|---|---|---|
| Infected | All islands | Baseline swarm pressure and chip damage |
| The Flood | Water routes | Route disruption and bad disengages |
| Virals | The north | Fast, tanky pressure that punishes weak spacing |
| Special infected | North and dungeons | Spitters, reachers, pigmen, and other high-risk encounters |
Threat Ranking
1. Pigmen and special infected
Pigmen are among the most dangerous infected types because they explode on death and split into fast parasites. They are most dangerous when the player has poor footing, is near a ledge, or is already fighting something else.
2. Virals and spitters
Virals take more punishment than southern infected and rush quickly. Spitters stay at range and can wear down armor or throw off movement during important fights.
3. Standard infected
Common infected are the baseline threat. They are easiest to clear, but they still kill undergeared players who move carelessly or let themselves get boxed in.
Handling Rules
| Threat | Best response |
|---|---|
| Pigmen | Keep distance, secure footing, and avoid detonating them in bad positions |
| Spitters | Carry an AR or sniper and remove them before they control the fight |
| Virals | Use fast-firing weapons like SMGs to maintain distance |
| Flood routes | Do not get trapped in water or low-mobility terrain |
Equipment Notes
- SMGs stay valuable against virals
- ARs and snipers are the safest answers for spitters
- slow weapons become risky when swarm density rises
- meds matter more once northward special infected start appearing regularly
